Member Spotlight: Mary-Jane Huntley
My name is Mary-Jane Huntley and I live in Queensbury with my husband of 45 years, Doug. We have two sons - both are married, and we have four beautiful grandchildren with one more on the way!
On Life in Queensbury
Doug and I met while I was working as a high school physical education teacher and coach in Vermont. We moved frequently due to his career as a school administrator, which is what brought us to Queensbury. We loved the area so much that we decided to stay. It’s the perfect place to be since we love to be active outdoors with running, walking, skiing, and swimming.
On A Rewarding Career
After 10 years of teaching, I earned a degree from Russell Sage College and transitioned to a career as a Physical Therapist. My work focused on helping children with developmental delays and neuromuscular diseases, which was such a rewarding aspect of my career.
On the Joys of Retirement
I retired so that I could spend more time with my grandchildren, who span in age from 2 to 13. A highlight of each summer for us is “Granny Camp”, when they all come to spend a week with us without their parents and we create a calendar of fun activities to enjoy together. Some of their favorites include time spent on Lake George - swimming, fishing, and picnicking on the islands. We also love to take them mini golfing, horseback riding, and bowling. Each year as they get older, there is more for us to do!
I also enjoy volunteering at the Queensbury Senior Center - the programs and welcoming environment have had a very positive influence in my retirement so far. I love the social aspects as well as the opportunity to serve on the Board of Trustees and contribute to the scholarship committee.
