This week we chatted with Norberto Ortiz! Below he shares more about his time in the military, his hobbies, and what he loves most about being a member at QSC.

On Career

My name is Norberto Ortiz Jr. I was born and raised in The Bronx in New York City. I graduated from Rice High School in Harlem in 1975. I then joined the Air Force and served as a Jet Engine Mechanic and Airman First Class.

My time in the military taught me the value of independence and to take pride in serving my country. I then worked for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation for 41 years as a supervisor of crews, groundskeeping and heavy-duty equipment operations.

On Family

I retired in 2020 and moved with my wife to Queensbury in 2022 in order to be closer to our daughter, Becki. It was time to start a new chapter in my life. My wife and I fell in love with the Adirondacks and enjoy the outdoors very much. It has been a welcome change from city living and an excellent location to live out our golden years.

On Hobbies

My hobbies include bowling, gardening, traveling, and listening to all kinds of music – with a special interest in rock and roll.

I joined the Queensbury Senior Center shortly after our move in order to network and connect with others in the area who may share my hobbies and interests. I have participated in a lot of the activities the Center has to offer, from picnics to day trips. I even won “Best Supporting Actor” during a visit from the traveling theatre that performed here! The Center is a plethora of resources that can make local senior’s lives fulfilling and fun.
